Coronary artery bypass surgery; valve surgery, repair and replace; cancer surgery of the lungs, esophagus, and trachea; aneurysm surgery of the aortic & abdominal aorta; peripheral vascular surgery; dialysis access, and modified maze procedure for treatment of atrial fibrillation.

Cardica Experience

An economic analysis of cases, from July 1 through Dec. 31, 2007, compared the costs of traditional on-pump to off-pump CABG using the C-Port systems and other ancillary products. Augelli and Robert Fietsam, MD, performed 78 off-pump procedures during the study period, resulting in total savings of $131,352.

In addition to operating room time savings of about two hours with beating-heart surgery, the study showed that the cost of beating heart procedures, which included the cost of the C-Port systems, were $14,905 vs. $16,589 for on-pump "arrested heart" surgery without use of the
C-Port. The average cost savings for beating-heart procedures with the use of the C-Port systems was $1,684 per procedure over traditional bypass surgery without the C-Port.

Background Information

Dr. Nicholas Augelli believes the single most important principle is that the patient comes first. In aiming to go above and beyond during every procedure, he believes the best care should be delivered with the best service in the most efficient manner. He also feels that it’s important to treat patients the same way he would want his own family cared for. Dr. Augelli says, “Cardiac surgery has always intrigued me as it combines anatomy and physiology, and offers the chance to apply knowledge from both subjects in critical care. Once the heart valve is repaired and the anatomy is fixed, the physiology and function begins.”

Born in Bari, Italy, he grew up in Niles, Illinois, and attended undergraduate school at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois, and medical school at the University of Illinois College of Medicine. He completed his surgical residency at William Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak, Michigan, in 1989 and served a fellowship in Cardiothoracic Surgery at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, Iowa City, Iowa, from 1989-1992. Dr. Augelli practiced at the University of Wisconsin from 1993-2004 as part of the clinical division based at Meriter Hospital in Madison, Wisconsin.
